What can you recycle in Gibraltar
A clear, plain-English guide to every bin colour — what goes in, what doesn't, and one simple tip for each.

MATERIAL 01
Glass
Glass is fully recyclable forever. Clean, dry and lid-free is the goal.
What goes in
- Glass bottles
- Jar
- Glass containers
What stays out
- Ceramics
- Mirrors
- Light bulbs
- Window glass
- Drinking glasses
Tip
Remove metal lids and place them with plastics and cans where accepted.

MATERIAL 02
Plastics & cans
The yellow bin handles a wide range of light packaging — both plastic and metal.
What goes in
- Plastic bottles
- Yoghurt pots
- Tetra Brik packaging
- Plastic bags
- Tins and cans
- Aluminium foil and foil trays
What stays out
- Heavily contaminated packaging
- Mixed-material items that can't be separated
Tip
A quick rinse goes a long way. Clean packaging is what keeps the whole stream useful.

MATERIAL 03
Paper & cardboard
Dry, clean paper has a long second life as new paper. Soggy or greasy paper does not.
What goes in
- Paper
- Cardboard boxes (flattened)
- Newspapers
- Magazines
- Office paper
- Packaging card
What stays out
- Food-soiled cardboard
- Greasy pizza boxes
- Wet paper
- Laminated materials
Tip
Flatten boxes — it saves space in the bin and makes collection more efficient.

MATERIAL 04
WEEE — small electricals
Anything with a plug, a battery or a circuit. Even the small stuff.
What goes in
- Small electrical items
- Toasters and hairdryers
- Watches
- Electrical toys
- Printer cartridges
- Coffee pods
- Vapes
- Batteries
What stays out
- Large appliances (fridges, washing machines, ovens)
Tip
Larger WEEE items should be taken to the Civic Amenities Site, not placed in pink bins.

MATERIAL 06
Cooking oil
Used cooking oil down the sink blocks drains and damages infrastructure. Bottle it.
What goes in
- Used cooking oil sealed in a plastic bottle
What stays out
- Loose oil
- Oil down drains
Tip
An empty water bottle works perfectly. Funnel the cooled oil in, cap it, drop it in the orange bin.

MATERIAL 07
Organic waste
Everything that grew or came from a kitchen. Composted, not landfilled.
What goes in
- Fruit and vegetable leftovers
- Food scraps
- Eggshells
- Coffee grounds
- Leaves and flowers
- Soiled paper plates and napkins
What stays out
- Normal refuse
- Plastics
- Packaging
Tip
Organic waste can be converted into compost — the brown bin is one of the highest-impact streams to get right.

MATERIAL 08
Textiles
Reusable clothing has a second life through charitable reuse. Damaged textiles get recycled into new fibres.
What goes in
- Clothes
- Shoes (paired)
- Curtains
- Bedding
- Household textiles
What stays out
- Wet textiles
- Heavily contaminated items
- Hazardous materials
Tip
Bag textiles before placing them in the bin. Reusable textiles can get a second life through charitable reuse routes.
